Evolving the Grid

In order for Connecticut to transition to carbon-free electricity, we will need to rethink our electric grid. Today’s grid was designed in a different age for a different mix of power producers and consumers. Even today, it has areas of congestion and vulnerability to weather events, and is holding back the clean energy transition in tangible ways. Connecticut’s utility regulator, PURA, has been hard at work ensuring that our electric grid will be capable of meeting the demands it will face as we transition to renewable power generation and increased demand from electric vehicles and heat pumps. In this webinar, PURA Chairman Marissa Gillett and her team will update us on this work. Following this presentation, State Representative Jonathan Steinberg, Co-Chair of the Joint Energy & Technology Committee, will join Chairman Gillett in a “fireside chat” on the state of Connecticut’s energy transition.
About Marissa Gillett, Chair of PURA
Chair Gillett began serving on the three-member regulatory authority on April 26, 2019. Gillett also serves as one of Connecticut’s representatives on the Board of Directors of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, Inc. (RGGI). Prior to her appointment, Gillett was the Vice President of External Relations for the Energy Storage Association – the national trade association representing the energy storage industry. In that role, Gillett served on the association’s executive team, contributing to the organization’s overall strategic vision and direction, as well as providing leadership of the research, educational programming and events, marketing, and communications teams. From 2011 to 2018, Gillett worked at the Maryland Public Service Commission, an independent agency within the Maryland state government that regulates public utilities, where she most recently served as the senior advisor to the chairman.
About Representative Jonathan Steinberg
Jonathan Steinberg was first elected to serve as State Representative in the 136th Assembly District of Westport in 2010. The district includes most of Westport. He serves as House Chair of the Legislature's Energy & Technology Committee. Jonathan also serves on the Public Health and Transportation Committees. He is a member of the Advanced Manufacturing, Tourism, Long Island Sound, and Intellectual Disabilities Caucuses and is now Co-Chair of the Bioscience Caucus.
